Leading indicators

Last night while watching our local cable TV news I heard the lead talking
head speculating on what steps a "retail investor" (that term makes me
wonder how I can become a wholesale investor and get a discount) should take
in the current market. He advised that one should look to some leading
indicators to predict when the market will turn around. One of these leading
indicators was Arctic Cat; as he put it "if people start buying snowmobiles
in this economy it's a good sign that the worst is over".

It's clear that it's our patriotic duty to buy a new sled and end this
recession.

I'm guessing that other brands than Arctic Cat would also provide the cure.

The trickle down effect is going to be terrible this spring and summer.
People are going to separate the wants from the needs.

In hard(er) times do people need a new sled, boat or ATV?
Do they need some guy cutting their grass, instead of doing it
themselves? Having a company spray their lawns for weeds and to keep
it nice and green is a need? I believe some won't even wash their cars
because of the water costs, let alone water their lawns this year.

A bad time to be in the "wants" business.

I guess I have changed that much.

Retial investor is the more traditional model where the investor pays
traditional broker fees.

Wholesale investor is the guy on line with folks like Ameritrade

I saw a friend in front of Target, where the garage and stairs kind of meet.
I had just come from shopping, and she and a bunch of other employees (I
guess they were employees) were out there, and she was just about to light
up. I said hi, and when she didn't answer, I figured my eyes were playing
tricks on me. I had my reading glasses on so everything was blurry. So I
didn't trust what I was seeing enough to bug her.

Target is really the only kind of store that is close to me

my eyesight is good enough that I know I have never seen a snowmobile in
there

if people start buying them though, the world is ending because it means we
have started the cult of Sarah who I have no doubt is in her own evangelical
way ready for the world to end

Hope my friend's stay up here was pleasant. I work on the 13th floor of the
building where the Target is where she had training.

I don't think that's how retail and wholesale investors are normally
defined. A wholesale investor would typically be a pension fund, a mutual
fund, a hedge fund, or other large corporate investor. A retail investor
would typically be all the rest of us.

It's difficult to respond to your other comments; are you saying that your
local Target store had a snowmobile on display? And that is somehow related
to a "Cult of Sarah (Palin?) ? As for the evangelical reference: are the
Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse now outdated and replaced by the Four Major
Snowmobile Manufacturers?

If your world does end, can I have your stuff?

Exactly, those that have / use their own market maker or have a spot on
the floor, are wholesale.

Gary, I don't have that spot on the floor you speak about, but have often
been that spot, and still haven't gotten my discount. Actually, it was more
like a grease spot on the highway, but let's not be picky.

ACAT is trading at $4.20, down over 60% in the past 4 months; you guys
aren't trying hard enough.

ACAT is in dire straits - as are the others.


"NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Arctic Cat Inc., which makes all-terrain
vehicles and snowmobiles, dropped Thursday after offering a
weaker-than-expected outlook and saying it would suspend its dividend,
despite posting a smaller third-quarter loss.

The company posted a third-quarter loss of $2.7 million, or 15 cents per
share. A year earlier, Arctic Cat's loss totaled $10.5 million, or 58
cents per share.

The company also said it will suspend its quarterly dividend of 7 cents
per share in a bid to save $5 million annually.

Arctic Cat, which recently cut about 7 percent of its 1,400 workforce,
said it doesn't expect to take a material charge for the layoffs."
