Just rebuilt the motor on this sled. Symptoms: Runs fine anywhere
from 1/4 to WO throttle. Plenty of power, sounds good. Below 1/4
throttle, the engine "pops" or "backfires" out the exhaust system, and
it won't idle period. In order to keep it running, I have to maintian
approximately 1/8 throttle position, or continuously rev and release.
It starts fine when cold under choke, but sometimes doesn't want to
start when luke warm, choke or no choke. Anyone out there have a clue
for me?

It sounds like you need to get the carbs synchronized and the throttle
cables adjusted... that needs to be done any time you remove the carbs
and/or engine if you want it to start, idle, accelerate properly and get
decent mileage.

Although I am not familiar with AC, if it has Mikuni carbs, it could be
blockage in the idle metering passage. Although you may have cleaned the
carbs, this little sucker was clogged solid in my sled and wouldn't idle.
It's a tiny brass cylindrical metering piece that is screwed into a hole
about 1/8th of an inch. You should see this hole looking at the carb upside
down next to the main metering valve. It has a slot for a small flat
screwdriver. Carb cleaner alone wasn't enough on mine and had to use a
bristle from a steel brush to clear out the tiny passages.

Another thing to check after the idle circuits in the carb is the fuel pump.
Leaking fuel pump diaphragms let gas into motor, will start OK cold as it's
rich and cold motor likes that.
When motor is warm it floods the bottom end and makes for hard starting,
leaking bad enough will flood motor.
Pull the impulse line and check for fuel in it. That's the line from the
pump to the crankcase.

Bud was going to buy one of them and it had some funk to it. Per
advice of Doug Miller deduced that the stater was junk which was not
uncommon in them models for whatever reason. Things to think about if
the above mentioned simplicities dont get er done buddy. Sell it now,
its a big heavy son of a bitch good for oohing and awwing the woman
and kids only lol. Sorry Bill.
